I def liked Brass too Jan but you have to give to get & this is a very good deal. MZ still has some serious upside if he keeps his nose to the grind. We get younger, save cap space & regain some of that lost speed.
I like the deal. Brass loved it here in NY and NY loved him but if the right deal is on the table you take it. This is a good deal for us with Z having upside and we get bigger and faster at the same time. Also adds a RH shot which I've been saying we need but we need that RH shot more on the wing. Overall sad to see Brass go but we made the right call IMO.
I read your blogs regularly and respect your opinion. I think on the face of it, yes NYR won the deal with the 2nd round pick inclusion. (Although I'm sure it was the price OTT had to pay to wait until after July 15th so NYR would pay the 2million dollar bonus)
That said, having watched every single game Zibby has played in a Sens uniform.....you are mistaken about his defensive ability and the fact that he is a "3 zone" player. He really isn't. He only played in certain roles out of necessity, at times lack of Sens depth and to help him develop. I have a signed #93 jersey on my wall and I am sorry to see him go.....but in all honesty based on 4+ seasons...he is at BEST a 2nd line center but there are plenty of times (while in OTtawa) his ability to hold on to that role was questionable.
I think he will do well in NYR with that line up...Put him with a playmaker and he will put up points but you will see he is not better than Brassard defensively and you will be lamenting the number of times Zibby misses the net.

Sens - thanks for the info. In terms of your point in the pick, I can definitely see that and interesting the answer the Ottawa GM gave to that question. But knowing Melnyk as we do, money was very likely a motivator.
Hopefully the growth Z has exhibited the last few years continues and the issues you pointed out get remediated as he continues to mature. Personally, I thought he took a big step forward last year, putting some of those questions behind him but they still linger based upon what you pointed out.

I agree....I am definitely sorry to see Zibby go and I think AV and his systems can help Zibby grow.
I think at the end of the day.....this trade will benefit the Sens and Rangers on and off the ice.

Hope this helps both teams, I was a bit surprised by the 2nd rounder though. I understand what your saying about the 2 mill, but 2nd rounders have a pretty good success rate in the NHL.
Not than I'm complaining.
Rangers won the deal. It's not even close. They got the better player and the better draft pick. NY should have sent the 2nd not the other way around. - Bruiniak
They also got younger. As a neutral party I don't really understand this from Ottawa's perspective unless they think they are in win now mode. If so they are the only people who think so.

Definitely going to miss Brass next year, real classy guy. Glad he gets to play for his home team.
This trade seems to have tremendous upside for the Rangers, plus a pick.
Brass's bonus doesn't count against the cap, right? So we got the 2nd rounder just for being patient since money doesn't matter in NYC.
Tom should be thrilled with the extra diversity on the bench next season.

Brassard has out scored Zibby in every single season but he's the worse player? Interesting.
Don't me wrong 93 is a good young player with the POTENTIAL to be 60-65pt guy but he has consistently showed up to camp in horrible shape and has had god awful starts to his seasons.
Like many have stated I think the trade is great for both teams and right NOW the Sens have the better player IMO

Sens are huge in Canada, but NY is the big market team. Z is playing for a contract under the bright lights of Madison Garden. If this doesn't get him off his ass, nothing will. No Ranger fan will trash Brass, great player who always brought it in the big games.
We're just happy to get a young player with great potential in a trade instead of the usual 3rd/4th line grinder. If it doesn't work out you can sign him next year.

Great trade but Mika does not make your team faster. Doesn't mean he's not worth it, I love the guy, love how he plays and he will fit in that jersey beautifully. Hopefully he plays with Nash and they can become one of the best second lines in the league. Cuz I believe Miller zucc and Stephan proved they can whip that one spot.
